The town tower has been, for several centuries, the main landmark of Trnava. The main purpose of the tower was to function as a lookout tower, contributing to the security of the town. This, almost 60m tall renaissance structure contains unique clockwork inside. From history...
The history of the Town tower started in 1574. Jakub (Jacob), a master bricklayer, promised mayor Juraj Schelgl that he would start and finish building of the tower. And he did. On the day when the tower was ceremonially presented to the town, every bell in the town tolled and master Jakub heaved a sigh of relief: „I made it.“
Town Tower today...
The last renovation of the Town tower was done in 2005, which saw the tower regain its former lustre and glory. A glass alcove with a stone coat of arms was added as well as the original decoration - illusive ashlar masonry on every corner of the tower. The lookout terrace of the tower is situated 29 m above the ground and in order to reach it you have to ascend 143 stairs. You will be rewarded with a unique view of the whole town as well as Trnava flatlands and the Little Carpathians. A former symbol - a moon with a star - at the top of the tower was replaced with a golden statue of Virgin Mary - Immaculata that never turns its back to the town, which is symbolized by the face, placed both at the front and at the back.
What the Town Tower secrets...
In 1729, a mechanical clockwork was installed on the fifth floor. The clockwork was made by Franz Langer and it strikes every quarter-hour. The masculine branch of the Nemček family has tended to the clockwork for four generations. Members of this family, who lived and even kept a goat here which fed on the grass in front of the tower, acted as watchmen and clocksmiths. You can hear the longest and most beautiful strike at 12 o'clock. Part of the tour of the Town tower is a permanent exposition dedicated to older as well as more recent history of the Town tower, Trnava, and its important figures.
