The oldest church in Trnava is the splendid St. Nicolas Basilica. Optically, it is situated at the highest point of town, at the place of former medieval market. Due to gracious painting of Virgin Mary of Trnava it has become an important pilgrim place.

From History...
A visible urban breakthrough came in the 14th century. Several sacral objects were created. The colossal Dome of St. Nicolas stood out above them. It is situated in the eastern part of the town centre, at the place of the oldest settling and at crossing of important trade routes. It replaced the original smaller Roman church that became probably inadequate for the needs of a developing town. No wonder that it was dedicated to St. Nicolas - patron of merchants.
Basilica Minor...

St. Nicolas Church was until 1820 a cathedral church owned by archbishops of Esztergom. The Pope Benedict XVI. promoted the St. Nicolas Dome to Basilica Minor. So it became the tenth basilica in Slovakia. Artistic jewels in this basilica are the unique historical organs. Also the prominent organist in Notre Dame cathedral - Olivier Latry or the important native of Trnava, composer and conductor Mikul83 Schneider Trnavský appreciated their sound.
Weeping Painting of Virgin Mary of Trnava...

The Baroque Chapel in the northern part of the church was built due to Imrich Eszterházy. A dominant part of this cupola shaped building is the gracious painting of Virgin Mary of Trnava - patron of Trnava town. Bloody tears appeared on this painting according to witnesses. In this way she warned Trnava people but also protected during the tragic events in the years 1663 and 1708. In her honour, thousands of believers have come to Trnava every year to worship the gracious painting during the Novena of Trnava, lasting for nine days.
