Do you know why the wine in Tirnavia is so special? At the beginning, top ten reasons chosen from hundreds will get your bearings...1. ORIGINAL VAULTED CELLARS
Town below the town. This is a label for Trnava, renowned far and wide thanks to the wine traders in Middle Ages. Tangled underground tunnels served as safe busy roads long ago. So far, you have the possibility to admire the fragments of these, often even two-floor vaulted cellars.
2. VINEYARDS IN THE BEST PLACES
People of Trnava have always known the best places for growing vine. They owned nearly all the vineyards at the foot of Little Carpathians and in village estates from Bratislava up to Hlohovec Why did they take interest into such far areas? It was worth it. The trade with wine was especially profitable.
3. THE BIGGEST BARREL IN THE WORLD
This is how European travellers referred to the monumental barrel with a capacity of 114 000 litres when visiting Trnava in 19th century. Its construction was ordered by Anton Valc, a famous wine wholesaler, in 1822. In 1823, the barrel was constructed in Valc's cellars that later became the seat of malthouse in Trnava, and it was filled with wine a year later. The filling process took several days. 32 steps lead to the top of the barrel and it was so big that 6 pairs of dancers could dance on it at the same time.
4. WINE AND LITERATURE
No doubt that everyone knows the famous novel „Red Wine“ written by the native of Suchá nad Parnou - František Hečko. However, only a few of people know that the main characters and also the novel itself are based on lives of author's parents. The Blauer Portugieser naturally became the main focal point of the story and it also a symbol of Trnava's viticulture. This fact is proven by fragments of burgher houses in valleys of Suchá, where Blauer Portugieser has been a constant companion to glasses of Trnava burghers since time immemorial.
5. THE MOST BEAUTIFIL STOPS ON THE WINE ROAD
Wine was a favourite commodity even for aristocracy and counts. Unfortunately, count Jozef Pálffy did not have time to fill his cellars. On the other hand, the visitors of Small Carpathian wine road have a unforgettable view from the Smolenice Castle, which is one of the stops on the road. The magical atmosphere can be also experienced at vineyards and cellars of well-known wineries in our region as well as the small ones with limited production, owned by various families.
